Legal Driving of Vehicles by Foreigners in Greece: What exactly applies?

  • Every foreign driver who has permanent residence in Greece is required to hold a valid Greek driving license appropriate for the category of vehicle they are driving.
  • Every foreign driver, over the age of 18, who does not have permanent residence in Greece, is required to hold a valid international driving license (appropriate for the category of vehicle they are driving), issued by any country.
  • International driving licenses cease to be valid in Greece once the holders acquire permanent residence in Greece. The reason is that the issuance of an international driving license serves and facilitates only those who travel occasionally or temporarily within Greek territory. Usually, a person is considered to have habitual residence in a country when they reside there for more than 185 days per year for personal or professional reasons.
  • If the holder of a driving license issued in an EU member state acquires permanent residence in Greece, they must convert that license into a Greek driving license of the corresponding category.
