A pet is a selected animal from a person for his protection or entertainment. They provide their owners with both physical and emotional benefits. Walking a dog, for example, can provide both humans and dogs with exercise, fresh air and social interaction. Science in many cases recommends pets for medical and psychological purposes.
In the last 20 years zoophile has increased a lot in Greece. As the animal welfare organizations claim, at least 15% of the population has one or more pets, while in recent years an animal-loving education has begun to develop, especially at an early age. It is also estimated that in 2019 the pet food expenditure in Greece passed €200 million compared to €100 million a decade earlier.
Although the rest of Europe has spoken out clearly in favor of the cat as a pet option, in Greece according to estimates, 14% of households that have at least one pet prefer the dog and 13% the cat. It is estimated that there are about 660,000 dogs and 590,000 cats in Greece.
Although in Europe pet insurance is common and has been available for many years, in Greece it is only now that the first substantial health insurance and accident programs for companion dogs are being introduced.
WHAT IS INSURED?
The new pet dog insurance programs ensure substantial cover against accidents and/or illnesses in dogs over 3 months old, regardless of breed, purebred or not. The owner of the dog is given the opportunity to choose cover against accident and/or illness as well as to choose the cover amount between the provided choices of €1000 and €2000.
WHAT IS COVERED?
1. Pet Health Rehabilitation Costs
- Hospitalization Expenses. The Company will cover the expenses you will incur for the hospitalization of your pet, with free choice of doctor or clinic, exclusively within Greece, provided at least one overnight stay in the clinic.
- Medical Expenses. The Company will cover expenses you will incur for Examinations, Doctors’ Fees, Treatments and Surgeries in order to restore the health of your pet.
2. Loss of Pet Life
Compensation in case of the loss of the life of the pet.
3. Pet Owner Cover
- Owner’s Liability in case your pet causes Property Damage, Bodily Injury or Death to third parties.
- Legal Protection of the Owner for claiming compensation, criminal defense and generally for any legitimate interest.
MULTIPLE INSURANCE DISCOUNTS
In case of insurance of 2 dogs of the same owner, a 5% discount is provided, while in case of insurance of 3 dogs or more of the same owner, a 10% discount is provided.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO INSURE A DOG
When concluding the insurance policy, you should have the following:
- Copy of Electronic Register Certificate
- Photocopy of all details of the health/passport booklet
- Photos (full face – profile) of the dog
