Driving a motorbike in Greece with a car license

A new law has been introduced on 7 May 2021, permitting holders of a car driver’s license to also ride a motorbike up to 125 cc.

A new National Code 121 has now been introduced which will be added the car drivers license (type B). This code will differentiate those able to drive a light motorbike from those with the ordinary car license.

Conditions

The conditions that the holder of the car license must meet in order to drive a motorbike up to 125cc are:

– Possession of the type B car driver’s license for at least six (6) years

– Driver age over 27 years

– Compulsory attendance of five (5) motorcycle driving courses type A1

Having met the above conditions, the driver should obtain the updated driving license B which indicates Code 121. The necessary documents are described in detail in Article 4A of GG 1845.

In addition to all the usual – VAT number, photocopies of ID, photo, document fee, etc. – a detailed certificate is required from the driving school stating the registration number of the training vehicle and the name of the instructor.

Extension to bigger motorbike license

The same Ministerial Decision also explains what is provided for drivers who later wish to extend their driving license to any bigger motorbike category.

The holder of a B driving license with National Code 121, in order to extend it to any of categories A1, A2 or A, must attend seven (7) practical courses with an educational motorcycle of the requested category, and is obliged to a theoretical examination of Questionnaire 2 (for motorbikes).

In addition, he should also take a driving test – a skill and behavioral test, as it is officially called – with the appropriate training bike.
