Protect your home during the winter

Protect your home during the winter

High winds and lashing rain can cause havoc on your property but there are some simple and effective steps you can take beforehand and during the storm to protect your home during the winter from storm damage.

1. Windows and Doors

Check the seals around doors and windows to stop wind or water entering the house and make sure that during the storm all doors, windows and shutters are tightly closed.

2. Your Roof

If you have a tiled roof, replace any missing or damaged tiles. If you are worried ask a professional for help.

3. Gutters and drain pipes

Clean out clogged gutters and drain pipes. Keep them free flowing and make sure the water from your balconies is drained quickly and does not end up in your bedroom.

4. Open areas (spaces)

Whether in a garden, balcony or roof secure furniture, potted plants, rubbish bins and any other objects that can be blown off and become dangerous during strong winds.

5. Protect Your Car

Park your car in a garage or move it to safe place to protect it from falling trees or branches.

6. Equipment

Depending on the type and the location of your home, consider having a water pump and a power generator and make sure they are in working order.

Generally

  • Make sure you know your property well i.e. know your electricity, water and gas switches and how to prevent damages to their piping or wiring. Know the safest room in the house and how to safely evacuate the house if necessary.
  • Keep your property looked after i.e. fix damages immediately, trim your trees etc.

Finally as an act of kindness you may want to check in with any vulnerable neighbors and don’t forget to keep your pets indoors during adverse weather conditions.

Even though you do your best to protect your home during the winter, there is no guarantee that there will be no damages. All you need is a home insurance to cover your needs and make sure you are covered against all unexpected scenarios.
