As of July 6, 2022, EU measures regarding new safety systems in cars are in force. More specifically, from now on all new cars manufactured in the EU will have to have some safety systems equipped.
What are the new safety systems in cars?
- Automatic braking: System approval – July 2022, Universal application to the new ones – July 2024
- Automatic braking for pedestrians and cyclists: System approval – July 2024, Universal application – July 2026
- Emergency braking lights: System approval – July 2022, Universal app – July 2024
- Detection of obstacles in reverse: System approval – July 2022, Universal application – July 2024
- Vigilance sensor: System approval – July 2022, Universal app – July 2024
- Lane keeping system: System approval – July 2022, Universal application – July 2024 (for cars with power steering: 2024 and 2026 respectively)
- Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) : System approval – July 2022, Universal application – July 2024
- Data loggers – Black boxes: System approval – July 2022, Universal application – July 2024
What is speed assist also known as ISA?
The ISA will recognize through a camera or the GPS system the speed limits on the respective road and in case the driver does not comply with them the system will warn him. The warning will be done with both visual and auditory stimuli. There will also be vibrations on the driver’s right pedal. In case the driver continues to not comply, then the system will slow down the speed of the car so that it does not exceed the limits. For the time being this system will be able to turn off or else with a press of the throttle the driver will be able to override it.
Why are new safety systems in cars becoming mandatory?
The new safety systems in cars are expected to reduce collisions by 30% and fatal accidents by 20%, resulting in over 140,000 dangerous injuries being prevented by 2038. With these systems, the EU aims to reduce deaths due to road accidents to zero by 2050.
